The word Mesopotamia originates from the ancient greek words 'middle' and 'river'. Mesopotamia means 'land between the rivers' referring to the Tigris and Euphrates. Northern Mesopotamia is made up of an expansive desert plateau and southern Mesopotamia is made up of wet lands and grassy plains.
